Haleakal'ā: The House of the Sun
It is zero-six-forty three Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time and in the dark hours of the morning, we have ascended to the summit of Maui’s volcano, Mt. Haleakala 10,023 feet above our condo at sea level. There’s no hot lava to be found here, though. This volcano has been dormant for over 200 years. However, Haleakala does have a different attraction for physical science enthusiasts.

Satire: Where are you Armageddon? For thousands of years, prophets around the world have predicted the end of days. More than one has suggested the apocalypse is fast-approaching.
What took it so long? Mightier than the pen? When American astronauts first took to the stars, they, like the Russians, used pencils. However, a broken lead tip from a pencil became a dangerous hazard to eyes, noses, and electrical devices alike in the zero-gravity capsule. Yikes!
Dark Lightning Strikes Closer to HomeYou've heard of dark energy and dark matter, but dark lightning?
Researchers were not surprised when NASA's Fermi Gamma Ray Telescope was hit by a beam of high-energy positrons, the antimatter equivalent of electrons. But they were surprised when they realized the antimatter came not from some black hole light years across the galaxy, but rather from our own planet! Thinking about body heat? The sad truth is, you lose just as much heat per square inch through your head as you do through the rest of the body, a fact that would become abundantly clear if you ever tried to scrape the frost off your windshield while naked.
